Unwanted or unused medication kept at home may make you a target of thieves looking to fuel their drug habit or family members trying to take advantage of you. We know it is easy for old medication to pile up, especially after you have recovered from a serious illness.
In early 2015, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office installed a Prescription Drug Drop Box. Citizens are allowed to come into the BCSO Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and dispose of unused or unwanted prescription drugs. There are no questions asked during the disposal of the medication, we only ask not to include any needles. The drop box is a metal mail box style container, secured behind multiple locked doors and is monitored by security camera 24 / 7.
We strongly encourage participation in this program and feel it will help limit the access to medication by thieves or family members. We do not recommend flushing the medication down the toilet or throwing it in the trash.
